The Italian Benevolent Society is the oldest independent Italian Society in the United States.  Established in 1881 as a charitable institution for the aid of  families of Italian Miners. These miners worked the Gold Mines of Amador County. The Society provided death benefits to those killed in the mines. As time went on it became a social and comunity based organization. The Society has been in operation for the past 130 years.
